Rhys is a Director of Photography currently based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia. An avid cinebuff turned cinematographer. Gravitating towards underground oddities & obscenities of life to inform his artistic practise.
Rhys structures his cinematography style to support the narrative through subtle subconscious means. This includes patterns, symbolism/semiotics & visual language to intensify themes. A music performance background has also informed his sense of rhythm & timing within camera operating.
Independent films require more for less; with limited funds, resources & time. As a result, Rhys plans heavily in the pre-production stage as a cornerstone for on-set efficiency. This includes 3D modeling locations to generate camera & lighting accurate storyboards. In turn, creating conversations with all departments via pre-visual representations. Recognising cross-department intentions/issues well ahead of schedule, whilst encouraging a more collaborative result.
In 2024, dir. Muraya Moore’s short film ‘Blood Sisters’ premiered at SXSW Sydney. While also screening in the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF), Byron Bay Film Festival (BBFF) & the Canberra Short Film Festival (CSFF).
He favours helping capture the visions of passionate local & independent storytellers. The films & artists which are most influential are too many to count, but stretch throughout time & across the globe.
